The dollar may not go as far as it used to in Europe, but there are still ways to make it to the continent without breaking the bank. We've got a few tips for you to stretch your budget, from picking the right destination to finding affordable accommodations.

First things first: flights to Europe will be cheaper during off-peak months, which means September to March. The busiest times are June through August - when Europeans also hit the road - so avoid summer travel if at all possible. If you have time, consider flying into a cheaper gateway city and booking a budget airline flight to your final destination.

When it comes to selecting a destination, consider places where the conversion rates are in your favor. Part of the reason Prague is so popular is because the exchange rate makes prices quite reasonable in the Czech Republic. But there are many other European countries where your dollar goes a long way. Once you've selected a location, consider lodging alternatives. Renting an apartment or home is typically cheaper than an equivalent hotel room. If you feel particularly adventurous and flexible with your travel dates, a home swap is an excellent option. Of course you need to rigorously screen your potential swap-mate, but if it pans out it could be a very inexpensive way to travel with the eyes of a local.
